Which cable tray system is right for your project?

Perforated Cable Trays configuration

Perforated Cable Trays

Perforated-base trays provide frequent cable support with openings for ventilation and cable attachment. Useful for power, control and instrumentation routes where the selected cable and project design permit.

Specify: Tray width, side height, sheet thickness, section length, hole pattern, cable load and support span.

Ladder Cable Trays configuration

Ladder Cable Trays

Side rails and spaced rungs provide an open cable route with good access for laying and inspection. Commonly selected for larger power cables, with rung spacing and supports matched to the cable requirements.

Specify: Width, side-rail height, material thickness, rung profile and spacing, cable weights, support span and fittings.

Enclosed & Partitioned Raceways configuration

Enclosed & Partitioned Raceways

Covered metal raceways organise cable routes with optional internal partitions for segregated services. Agree cable separation, bend radii, cover access and cable-entry arrangements with the electrical designer.

Specify: Width, depth, section length, number of partitions, cover type, entries, material, thickness and quantities.

Materials and finishes: choose for the environment

OptionWhere it may suitWhat to confirm
Pre-galvanised GIIndoor and relatively mild environments, subject to specification.Base-metal thickness, zinc coating specification, treatment of cut edges and fabrication details.
Hot-dip galvanised after fabricationOutdoor or more demanding exposure where the project specifies galvanised steel.Coating standard and thickness, drainage, hardware compatibility and site repair requirements.
Powder-coated steelIndoor industrial/commercial installations requiring a specified colour and surface finish.Surface preparation, coating system and thickness, RAL colour and any outdoor exposure requirements.
Stainless steel 304 / 316Projects with specified hygiene, moisture or corrosion requirements.Exact grade and surface finish; select for the actual chemical/chloride exposure. No grade is universally corrosion-proof.

How to select: six decisions before ordering

  1. Map the cables: cable type, outside diameter, quantity, weight and any future expansion.
  2. Confirm the route: horizontal/vertical runs, bends, drops, access, obstacles and cable bending radii.
  3. Choose the system: perforated, ladder or covered/partitioned raceway based on support, ventilation and segregation needs.
  4. Agree structural inputs: actual cable loading, support spacing, joint locations and permissible deflection. Thickness alone is not a load rating.
  5. Select protection: material and finish for indoor/outdoor, moisture, chemicals and cleaning conditions.
  6. Complete the bill of materials: straight lengths, covers, bends, tees, crosses, reducers, risers, couplers, clamps, brackets and fixings.

Accessories complete the route

Discuss horizontal and vertical bends, tees, crosses, reducers, cover sections, joint couplers, support brackets, hold-down clamps, fasteners and bonding provisions. Support design and electrical bonding/earthing requirements must follow the approved project design.

Materials / Coatings / Procurement

Cable tray finishes, standards & frequently asked questions

Choose perforated cable trays, ladder cable trays or covered raceways around the route, cable loading and environment. State the galvanising process or coating system explicitly so that quotations can be compared on the same basis.

What to confirm for each finish

Finish / materialProcurement details to agree
Pre-galvanised GIBase-metal thickness, zinc coating designation/mass, forming details and treatment of cut edges or welds.
Hot-dip galvanised after fabricationApplicable coating specification, local/average coating thickness where specified, drainage/venting, inspection and repair requirements.
Powder-coated steelSurface pretreatment, powder/coating system, indoor/outdoor exposure, colour/RAL, dry-film thickness and agreed inspection tests.
Stainless steel 304 / 316Exact grade, surface finish, fabrication/cleaning requirements and exposure-compatible hardware.
Combined galvanised + coating systemCompatibility, surface preparation and complete coating/inspection schedule; not merely two finish names.

Use clear units: sheet/base-metal thickness in mm, coating thickness in micrometres (µm), and sheet zinc coating mass in g/m² where applicable. These describe different properties and should not be substituted for one another.

Standards: system performance is different from a coating specification

ReferenceScope to discuss in the purchase specification
IEC 61537Requirements and testing for cable tray systems and cable ladder systems. Confirm load/span configuration and the evidence relevant to the supplied system.
ISO 1461Hot-dip galvanised coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles, including coating inspection/test requirements. Not a substitute for tray-system load verification.
IS 277Galvanised steel sheet/strip product requirements. A sheet certificate does not by itself certify the assembled tray system.
IS 2629 — applicable part/editionCode-of-practice provisions for galvanising processes, design, testing and application, as applicable to the project.

Project-specific compliance: these references explain specification choices; their inclusion is not a claim that every Infitra product is certified or tested to every listed standard. Agree the applicable current edition, drawings, tolerances, test scope and supporting material/coating/test documents in the order.

Reference catalogues: IEC 61537 · ISO 1461. BIS requirements and applicable editions should be checked against the official BIS catalogue and the project specification.

Buyer FAQs

What is the difference between pre-galvanised GI and hot-dip galvanised cable trays?

GI means galvanised iron/steel and does not by itself identify when the coating is applied. Pre-galvanised trays are formed from zinc-coated sheet; cutting and fabrication create edges or weld areas that need appropriate treatment. Hot-dip galvanising after fabrication coats the completed fabricated article. Specify the process, coating requirements and inspection documents, not only the word GI.

Which cable tray finish should I choose for an outdoor installation?

Choose for the actual moisture, rain, chemical, coastal and temperature exposure. Hot-dip galvanised after fabrication steel, a specified exterior coating system or a suitable stainless-steel grade may be considered. Confirm the complete coating/material specification, hardware and cut-edge or site-repair requirements with the project engineer. No finish has a universal service-life guarantee.

Can powder-coated cable trays be used outdoors?

Only when the substrate preparation, powder chemistry and complete coating system are suitable for the specified exposure. An indoor decorative powder coat should not be assumed suitable for outdoor or aggressive environments. Agree colour/RAL, coating thickness, adhesion requirements and any corrosion-performance tests before ordering.

Is powder coating the same as galvanising?

No. Galvanising applies a zinc coating to steel; powder coating applies a cured organic coating. They have different preparation, inspection and protection requirements. A compatible combined galvanised-and-coated system can be discussed where the project requires it.

Should I choose stainless steel 304 or 316 cable trays?

Confirm exposure, cleaning chemicals and chloride conditions before choosing the grade. Stainless steel 316 may be considered for more demanding chloride exposure, but neither grade is universally corrosion-proof. Specify the exact material grade, surface finish, fabrication requirements and compatible hardware.

Which standards are relevant to cable trays and galvanised finishes?

IEC 61537 addresses cable tray and cable ladder system requirements and testing. ISO 1461 addresses hot-dip galvanised coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles. IS 277 relates to galvanised steel sheets/strips, while the applicable part and edition of IS 2629 addresses galvanising practice. These have different scopes. Agree the project-required editions, test evidence and documents before purchase.

Does a thicker cable tray automatically have a higher safe load rating?

No. Capacity depends on material, profile, perforations, rail/rung design, connections, support span, load distribution and test conditions. Specify cable load, support spacing and the applicable test requirements; do not select by sheet thickness alone.

What information is required for a cable tray quotation?

Send tray type; width and side height; base-metal thickness; section length; quantity in metres and/or pieces; material/grade; pre-galvanised, hot-dip galvanised or powder-coated finish; covers/partitions; fittings/supports; cable load and span if known; drawings; delivery PIN code and timeline. Ask for material/coating reports and project-specific test documents where required.
